A passerby helped to hold a person who was in the water clinging on to a boat in the River Ouse in York until emergency services arrived.
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said crews from York and Acomb had attended the incident just after 01:00 GMT on Thursday.
A spokesperson said staff used a throwline for the passerby and person in the water to hold until the York Rescue Boat arrived at the scene.
The pair were then cared for by ambulance crews who were waiting on the river bank.
