A 51-year-old woman has appeared in court after "ammonia or a similar corrosive substance" was thrown at another woman in Glasgow city centre.

Gwen Dempster, 51, allegedly assaulted a 46-year-old woman, in Glasgow city centre's Buchanan Street at about 18.20 on Sunday.

She was also charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice by giving police officers false details and was remanded in custody during a private hearing at Glasgow Sheriff Court.

The woman was taken to hospital for treatment. Her condition is not known.

Court papers state that Ms Dempster, of the city's Govan area, acted in an aggressive manner and argued towards the victim.

It is then alleged that she swore and "discharged a quantity of ammonia or a similar corrosive substance from a bottle" at her.

This is said to have been to the victim's injury, impairment and to the danger of her life.

Ms Dempster faces a second charge of possession of a quantity of ammonia in a public place in Buchanan Street and elsewhere unknown to the prosecutor.

A final allegation stated that she behaved in a threatening or abusive manner towards police officers.

It is claimed she acted in an aggressive manner, shouted, swore as well as uttered offensive and derogatory remarks towards them.

Ch Insp Stephen McManus said: "We understand this was a worrying incident and thank the public for their assistance."

He added officers would be in the area and anyone with any concerns should approach them.

On Friday a woman was hit with a harmful substance in what detectives said was a targeted attack in a housing estate in East Kilbride.

The incident happened on Pine Crescent at about 10:55 on Friday.

A 30-year-old woman was checked over by emergency services but she was not seriously injured and did not require hospital treatment.
