A driver has been arrested after a "road rage incident" in which a man was assaulted, police have said.

Shortly after midday on Saturday, Wiltshire Police received a report of an assault in Steele Close, Devizes, after an incident on London Road.

Officers stopped the suspect in his car on New Park Street. A police vehicle was rammed twice during the encounter before the suspect attempted to flee on foot.

Police later arrested a man, aged in his 20s, on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm, failing to stop for police and dangerous driving.

He has since been taken into custody for questioning.

The victim of the assault, a man in his 20s, did not suffer any injuries, police confirmed.

Insp Gav Brewster commended the "excellent teamwork" required to make the arrest.

He said: “In the space of around 90 minutes, officers were able to locate the suspect in his vehicle and apprehend him, as well as secure the initial scene in Steele Close and attain CCTV footage of the incident.

“I appreciate this incident took place in central Devizes in the middle of the day with plenty of witnesses.

"If you have any concerns or anything you wish to talk about then please don’t hesitate to speak to one of our officers."
