Cycling and walking inspire art exhibition

In one session, participants decorated trainers with their own designs

An art exhibition celebrating cycling and walking has opened in Wolverhampton.

The event called Cycle? Walk? Art? has put art on display that was created in community workshops from July to September.

In the workshops, people took part in creative writing activities, sketching, mixed media projects, painting and photography.

The Wolverhampton exhibition runs until 1 December at the 01902 urban room gallery space in Queen Square.

People explored cycling and walking to create the artwork

Activities included making collages, taking guided painting and photography walks along canals and former railway paths, customising shoes, and walking to collect flowers and plant life.

A series of photowalks took place in Dudley and a theatre production in Solihull encouraged women to take up cycling, and in Sandwell, people made their own maps.

Sixteen artists delivered 91 workshops across the West Midlands over three months.

Some of the work that was created in the sessions has been posted online.

On Ya Feet with India Rafiqi saw people painting and drawing on trainers and shoes

Mark Corbin, director of the network resilience team at Transport for West Midlands, said: "We’re thrilled to see such powerful artistic expressions come out of this project and hope it encourages more people to consider sustainable travel.”

And local artist Ewan Johnston, who curated the show, said: “I hope visitors feel inspired by the artwork and consider how to embrace active travel in their own lives.”
