Plans have been lodged to knock down a former bank in Loughborough and build an 80-bedroom care home.

Synergy Care Developments has submitted a planning application to Charnwood Borough Council to redevelop the site of the former Barclays bank in Bishop Meadow Road.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) said the banking chain moved out of the site in 2020 and planning documents state there had been "little to no serious interest in the property" since the closure despite "extensive marketing".

According to documents, the proposed care home would cater to people who require elderly residential, nursing and dementia care.

Documents added there was a "considerable demand" for elderly and dedicated dementia care homes in the area.

The LDRS added the proposals could create about 70 part-time jobs.

Planning documents said the ground-floor bedrooms would have private patios or outdoor areas, while there would be a larger secure garden for all residents that would be masked from public view.
