Dog shot dead by police after two hurt in attack

Armed police shot dead an out-of-control dog to allow ambulance staff to treat two people the animal had just mauled.
The dog was destroyed by firearms officers on Denman Road in Wath upon Dearne on 3 June, South Yorkshire Police said.
The creature had left a man, 31, with "potentially life-altering" injuries, while a 54-year-old woman was also hurt, suffering injuries described by police as minor.
A force spokesperson said officers had been unable to capture the dog and authorisation was given to destroy it as medics were unable to treat the injured pair.
"Inquiries are ongoing to determine how the dog came to be dangerously out of control," the spokesperson added.
"Officers are appealing for witnesses of the incident and those with CCTV footage to come forward."
