A number of flood warnings are in place across Yorkshire after Storm Claudia brought torrential rain, while rail services have also been affected.
The Environment Agency (EA) said flooding was expected on the River Aire in Castleford, along the River Ouse in York, on the River Nidd in Hunsingore and in Beighton near Sheffield.
It said the Foss Barrier was in operation and advised York residents to put their flood plans in place.
Flooding has also affected several rail services including Northern-operated journeys between Leeds and Manchester, and Supertram services in Sheffield.
In York city centre, residents in riverside areas were advised to start acting on their flood plans with flooding expected on King's Staith and from Lendal Bridge to Millennium Bridge.
The EA said water levels would continue to rise throughout the day, peaking on Sunday morning.
In Castleford, high river levels are expected to cause flooding at Allerton Ings including on the A656 Barnsdale Road between Allerton Bywater and Castleford.
The public are advised to avoid using low-lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses.
In North Yorkshire, there is a warning in Hunsingore with potential for flooding at the Old Cornmill.
Flooding is also expected on the River Rother in Beighton along Woodhouse Lane, Rotherham Road and near Crown Works Industrial Estate.
EA flood duty manager Ben Lukey said "significant river flooding impacts" were possible throughout the day.
He said: "Environment Agency teams are out on the ground to clear any debris from watercourses and preparing to operate flood defences when needed."

Rotherham Council said the Canal Barrier at Forge Island had been closed as a precaution
Rail services are affected across the region.
Northern said cancellations and severe delays were expected between Manchester Victoria and Leeds on Saturday.
The operator advised customers to check before they travel.
Meanwhile, Sheffield Supertram services between Meadowhall South (Tinsley) and Parkgate has been suspended for the rest of the day.
Network Rail said it had taken the "proactive step" to shut Rotherham Central station due to the risk of flooding.
It was originally due to reopen at midday on Saturday, but remained closed into the afternoon.
