The cast has been announced for a new television drama based on the Lockerbie bombing.

Sex Education star Connor Swindells and Scots actor Peter Mullan are among the names - with filming already under way in South Scotland.

The six-part series is being made by World Productions as part of a collaboration between the BBC and Netflix.

It comes as Colin Firth is set to star in a rival Sky drama about the investigation into the 1988 terror attack on Pan Am flight 103.

Suits actor Patrick J. Adams, Downton Abbey's Phyllis Logan, and Merritt Wever from Unbelievable are among the cast.

The project was initiated by filmmaker Adam Morane-Griffiths, whose research and extensive interviews with Scottish police officers and US investigators includes many speaking for the first time.

Filming is already underway in Scotland and will continue in both Malta and Toronto.

Britain's worst terror attack

On 21 December 1988, flight Pan Am 103 was en route from Heathrow to JFK when a bomb exploded in its hold while flying over the small Scottish town.

It killed 270 people, including 43 British citizens and 190 Americans.

Its the worst ever terror attack on British soil.

Lockerbie will focus on the crash investigation on both sides of the Atlantic, and the devastating effect it had on the small town, and the families who lost loved ones.

The drama will cover the initial search for evidence on the ground in Scotland, via the US and Malta, to the trial at Camp Zeist in 2000 before taking viewers right up to the most recent indictment in late 2022.

The lead writer is novelist Jonathan Lee, with two episodes written by Scottish screenwriter Gillian Roger Park.

The series is being produced in association with MGM Television and Night Train Media.
