Two people are in hospital in a critical condition after being hit by a van near shops.

A 14-year-old girl and a 71-year-old man were injured near Castle Court Shopping Centre in Caerphilly at about 15:00 GMT on Tuesday.

Gwent Police said a Cardiff man, 24, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving whilst over the prescribed limit of drugs.

Officers are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage that could help with their investigation.

Sgt Lewys Davies said: "We’re carrying out a thorough investigation into this collision and ask that members of the community do not speculate about the circumstances on social media as this might hinder our enquiries.

“You will see an increased police activity in this area over the coming days while our investigation continues."
