A fire on a landfill site that burned for more than three days has been extinguished.

Cleveland Fire Brigade confirmed on Friday the blaze at Seaton Meadows had "successfully concluded", but added it continued to monitor the site.

The fire, which involved a large number of tyres, was first reported on Tuesday morning.

The cause has not been confirmed.

People were warned to keep windows and doors closed during the fire, and those in the affected area were asked to minimise time spent outside.

On Thursday, the Environment Agency said samples had been taken from a watercourse near the site.

It added fire water run-off was being contained in a pond on the site, with "minimal impact" on the environment.

'Resilience'

Cleveland Fire Brigade said it "understood" the incident's impact and added it appreciated the "patience, cooperation, and resilience" of the community.

A local resident previously told the BBC they were "really, really concerned" and had considered leaving their home.

On Thursday, a primary school in the area was unable to cook hot meals for children after the extraction fan could not be used due to the fumes.

The fire service said: "Your safety remains our priority. We will continue to monitor the site to ensure complete safety and address any residual concerns.

"We will also work with the site and partner agencies to understand the cause of the fire."
