A veterans' village planned for East Yorkshire has received a £500,000 funding boost.

The Cottingham development, led by Hull4Heroes, will help ex-service personnel transition to civilian life.

The charity said the money from the Office for Veterans' Affairs and the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust would help support the first phase of the build.

Work on the £18m development started last year.

In a post on social media, the charity wrote: "It’s heartening to know we now have the substantial backing of two prestigious organisations, and this support marks a key milestone in our mission to create a lasting impact for our armed forces community."

The idea of creating a community for veterans was first conceived about six years ago, with planning permission for the housing scheme granted in 2020.

Veterans will also get help with practical issues such as financial support, the charity said.

In November last year, a ground-breaking ceremony was held.

At the time, Paul Matson, from the charity, said it was an "absolutely fantastic" moment for everyone involved.
