A person has been taken to hospital after a crash which closed part of the A19, causing drivers major disruption.

Northumbria Police was called to the A19 northbound carriageway, at Seaton near the turn-off for Sunderland, at about 23:00 GMT on Monday.

Ambulance crews, the Great North Air Ambulance and the fire service also attended and a person was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

A section of the carriageway which was closed between the junctions for the B1404, close to Seaham, and the A690 Herrington Interchange, reopened Tuesday morning.

Motorists faced lengthy delays, with National Highways working to clear up the scene with diversions in place.

The road had been closed in both directions but National Highways said that the both carriageways had reopened at about 09:50 GMT.
