Argyll and Bute councillors have agreed to push ahead with plans for a new secondary school in Mull.
A business case will now be prepared and the council will undertake a consultation with the community to decide on a location.
A meeting of the council on Thursday morning heard that it would be the biggest project ever undertaken by the local authority.
Argyll and Bute Council may have to shoulder 80% of the cost of the project which is estimated at £100m.
