A man has been arrested after an elderly woman was seriously injured in a suspected hit-and-run crash in Leeds.

The 79-year-old pedestrian was struck by a grey Volkswagen T-Cross at 16:50 BST on Monday in Harehills, West Yorkshire Police said.

The vehicle then left Foundry Approach "at speed", and was later found abandoned on Harehills Park Road.

A 30-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday night on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene and possession of cannabis.

The woman is receiving treatment in hospital for injuries described as "serious but not life-threatening", police said.

The arrested man remains in custody.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
