Residents in Telford and Shrewsbury have been warned by police to stay "extra vigilant" following a spate of distraction burglaries.

West Mercia Police confirmed it had received reports that two men in the area were visiting the homes of vulnerable people.

The suspects are said to gain entry to the homes by presenting themselves as salespeople who sell a range of household items from a large sports bag.

On letting the men into their homes, victims reported money and bank cards being stolen, said the force.

A spokesperson for the force said multiple reports had been made between midday and 14:30 BST on Saturday.

They added that the first man has been described as white, in his mid-30s and had been seen wearing a dark tracksuit.

The second man was described as white, around 5ft 10ins tall, aged around 50, with light hair, wearing dark clothing and with a local accent.

It is also believed one or both of the men were travelling in a "red van with windows".

PC Ellingford said: "Following the spate of incidents this afternoon, I would urge to you be extra vigilant.

"Do not purchase anything from these types of salespeople, do not let them in to your home and never hand over cash on your doorstep.

"If you feel threatened close the door and call the police."

The officer also thanked those who had come forward after being targeted.
