A Worcester hospital's new £35m emergency department has been officially opened by Princess Anne.

The princess also met staff from stroke, frailty and same day emergency care at the Worcestershire Royal Hospital to learn more about the work they do.

The multimillion-pound development included an expanded paediatric area with a separate entrance and an improved layout to support patient flow.

Glen Burley, Chief Executive of Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “We were delighted when Her Royal Highness accepted our invitation to visit our new emergency department."

He added: “The event served as a thank you to everyone who been involved in bringing the new department to fruition.”

The hospital was built in 2002 and it was estimated up to 45,000 patients would be admitted to the emergency department each year.

Now the hospital cares for 85,000 patients.
