A new home for a town’s library is still being sought after 20 potential sites were found to be unsuitable or unavailable.

Whitchurch Library in Shropshire was forced to move out of the Civic Centre in 2023 when engineers found Raac (reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete) in the building.

The library has since been located in the town’s market hall as a pop-up service while Shropshire Council looks for a permanent base.

The authority said 20 locations had been looked at so far but none had met its requirements.

It said the new site must adhere to health and safety legislation, be accessible to all users, meet basic staff welfare requirements and have the facilities to function as a public library.

Councillor Robert Macey said the authority was doing all it could to find a new home for the library.

He also urged people to come forward with suggestions.

Councillor Peggy Mullock, who represents Whitchurch North, said: “It has been a hard task to find a property suitable but hopefully there will be somewhere soon.”
