A decade has gone by since the States of Guernsey approved Sunday trading - and one shop owner says it is now his "second busiest day".

Deputies voted to get rid of their control on Sunday opening times in 2015, with the first Sunday trading taking place on 13 December of that year.

Mark Harvey, from Town Butchers, said it was a "very busy day" for his business, a day when customers would come in to buy barbecue food or a roasting joint.

But, Ellie Schreibke, owner of Maison Lifestyle, in St Peter Port, said she closed on Sundays for "a switch off from all the busyness that comes with the shop".

Mr Harvey said a lot of butchers would open on Sunday mornings, even before Sunday trading changed in 2015.

"I actually had a trading licence for two weeks before they changed the law," he said.

"For me, it's the second busiest day of the week after Saturday."

Mr Harvey said staff would get Mondays and Tuesdays off.

Mr Ahmed said Sunday was the "perfect" day for customers to try on shoes at his shop

Ms Schreibke said she shut her shop for "a day off", but said she was considering opening over the festive period.

"I am thinking maybe Christmas time to possibly be open for a few hours on a Sunday," she added.

Shaz Ahmed, who is the owner of shoe shop, Beghins, in St Peter Port, and which opens on Sundays, said the firm had "a bit of footfall from tourism" on Sundays, as well as from workers who were unable to visit the shop on Saturdays.

"We find with our shop, being a shoe shop, people want to take a bit of time to try shoes on and Sunday is a perfect day for it," he said.
