Norwich South MP Clive Lewis said he was willing to step down from his seat to allow Andy Burnham to return to Parliament

Constituents in Norwich South appear to be conflicted after their MP offered to give up his seat to enable Andy Burnham to challenge for the Labour leadership.

Labour MP Clive Lewis told BBC's Politics Live on Wednesday that he was willing to step down from his seat to allow Burnham, the Greater Manchester mayor, to return to the House of Commons.

Lewis later said it had been a "hypothetical" question, and No 10 declined to comment.

In Norwich, Emma Rope said she thought Lewis was "quite popular" and "he should hold on to his seat here".

Lewis has been an MP for 10 years, and last year he increased his majority to more than 13,000.

Emma Rope said she voted Labour at the last general election

Ms Rope said she thought it would be "a foolish move" and one that would not go down well.

She said she voted for Labour at the last general election, adding: "I still think that they are doing good stuff, but sadly they are not doing it so the public can see. "

David Jackson questioned Andy Burnham's knowledge of Norwich

When Burnham was quizzed on Lewis's offer, he refused to rule out a leadership bid he insisted he was "fully focused" on his current role.

David Jackson said Burnham "might be a better fit" as prime minister and said the story had "put Norwich on the map for a week".

But Mr Jackson added: "This is Norwich, so it is a different location... what does [Burnham] know about the environment here and what people want?"

Sarah Langshaw said she was "all for" someone challenging Sir Keir Starmer

Sarah Langshaw said she was all for someone challenging the current leadership of the party, and said Burnham had got a good track record.

"I do not really know Clive Lewis, but I do know Keir Starmer and Andy Burnham, and a swap of those two would be good," she said.

But following his Politics Live appearance, Lewis said he had "no plans to stand down".

"A hypothetical question was put to me, and my answer was consistent with what I've been saying, that I am serious about putting country before party," he said.
