Victorian sewer halts town resurfacing work

A pipe was on top of a Victorian sewer, just below the surface of the road

Resurfacing work has been delayed and a road has been closed, after an underground water pipe and Victorian brick sewer were discovered.

The pipe, in High Street, Bishop's Castle, was closer to the surface than anticipated and sat on top of the sewer, so was struck by contractors carrying out the work.

The pipe was repaired, and Severn Trent will carry out an additional survey to identify any other pipes.

Shropshire Council said the road would be closed for safety reasons for at least a week.

The road remains open to pedestrians

The authority added that access remained for pedestrians to shops and other businesses in the town.

The work was part of resurfacing to three roads in the town, Church Street, High Street, and Market Square, which was due to be completed by 21 August.
