Driver taken to hospital after crash closed M1

The closure has caused significant disruption

A driver has been taken to hospital after a two-car crash on the M1, which led to the motorway being shut in both directions.
Emergency services were called to the northbound carriageway between junctions 20 and 21 in Leicestershire shortly after 12:00 BST on Tuesday.
Leicestershire Police said a blue BMW 5 Series collided with a red Ford Mondeo before leaving the carriageway and hitting a tree.
National Highways later confirmed that all lanes had reopened between Lutterworth and the M69 at Leicester, and there were no delays on that section of the motorway.
Leicestershire Police said the BMW driver had been taken to hospital and was undergoing treatment for injuries, adding no-one from the Mondeo was injured.

The southbound carriageway was closed to allow an air ambulance to land
