A leaning tree which a council said has become "a real cause for concern" is to be removed.

Bedford Borough Council said it had been monitoring the pine tree near North Cottages and Robinson Pool for the past five years.

It explained that due to the tree’s location in Bedford Park and the potential risk it poses, it has decided to take it down.

The 16m high tree has leaned over by 9cm in the past year and 12cm overall since the first measurement was taken in 2019.

The council said that the increase in the angle of the lean indicates that it has become unstable.

Bedford Borough Council posted on X, external that while the decision to remove it might be disappointing news for some, safety is its top priority.

Options are being explored to replace the tree with a new one that will thrive in the park.

No date has yet been set for the removal of the tree.
