A Devon town's police presence is being increased over the summer to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour.

Devon and Cornwall Police said it was sending more officers to Salcombe during the summer months as part of efforts to make people in the town feel safe.

The force added a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) would also be in place to help combat anti-social behaviour such as drinking alcohol in public and making excessive noise.

Police said the PSPO can be used to remove people from the area for up to 24 hours if their behaviour is causing a nuisance and a £1,000 fine can be handed out to anyone who does not comply with the order.

'Safeguard visitors'

Insp Ben Shardlow, who leads neighbourhood police teams in South Hams, said the action was being taken after officers spoke to locals about their concerns.

He said patrols were not being increased because officers expect problems during the summer, but to help support people in the town and show crime will not be tolerated.

"This proactive activity forms part of our commitment to safeguard visitors, residents and local businesses during the busiest time of the year," Insp Shardlow said.

"We don’t want to stop anyone from having a great time, we just want to make sure people can enjoy their time safely in Salcombe."
