A retailer will close its current store in a major shopping centre as it relocates to a flagship unit.

A spokesperson for Eldon Square shopping centre in Newcastle said the Next store, currently located on Newgate Street, will be moving to the former Debenhams unit in St. Andrew’s Way.

The new Next store will open in the flagship unit, which has been empty since 2021, in October, the spokesperson said.

They also said they expect to create 500 new job opportunities across the shopping centre, following further new lettings.

Eldon Square is 60% owned by intu Debenture and 40% by Newcastle City Council.

The local authority confirmed there would be an improvement to the council’s budget, which would fill the current void left by Debenhams.

'Vote of confidence'

Newcastle City Council announced beauty brand Sephora will also be coming to the shopping centre, external.

Leader of Newcastle City Council, councillor Nick Kemp, said: "This exciting announcement shows just how attractive Newcastle is for global retailers. It is a vote of confidence in our city centre and a statement of intent by the retail industry.

"Not only will the opening of these stores attract more visitors to our city, but it will create jobs and boost our economy."

When asked if Sephora would move into the old Next store, Eldon Square said they "did not have any additional information", but would be updating in due course.
