A major road into a town will undergo a series of closures so essential repair work can be carried out on a bridge.

National Highways will replace joints, install new kerbs and resurface the bridge on Oxford Road, Abingdon, Oxfordshire.

There will be several overnight closures, starting with two-way traffic lights from 20:00 to 06:00 BST for seven nights from Friday.

Weekend closures will take place from 5 to 8 July, 12 to 15 July, and 19 to 22 July. These will last from 21:00 on the Fridays to 06:00 on the Mondays.

A contingency weekend closure has also been scheduled, should it be required, from 2 to 5 August.

During the works Oxford Road, also known as the A4183, will be closed between Dunmore Road and Sugworth Lane.

The northbound A34 entry slip at Abingdon will be closed during the weekend closures, while the southbound A34 exit slip will be open, but traffic will only turn left to Abingdon.

A shuttle bus service will operate for pedestrians and cyclists during the weekends.

Diversions will be in place, external.
