Leicester city car parking charges set to rise

The city council said rates had not changed since 2014

Some parking costs in parts of Leicester will double as part of a review of charges.

Most car parks, multi-storeys and on-street pay and display areas will see an increase of £1 an hour - effectively doubling the charge for the first hour.

The city council said charges had not risen since 2014 and the new levels would be in line with those of Nottingham and Derby.

The new rates are expected to come into force in mid-December.

In the Haymarket and Newarke Street Car Parks, for example, costs will start at £2 for a one-hour stay, up from the current £1.

People parking for up to three, four and five hours will now have to pay £4, £5 and £7, respectively, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

The option for a 15-minute stay for 20p in London Road, between its junction with Granville Road, where it merges with St George’s Way, is also set to be scrapped.

Fees here will instead start at £1 for half an hour.

But a day trip to Abbey Park could more than double in price for drivers, with the 12-hour offer set to increase to £9 from £4.
