The main road through a village in the south of the Isle of Man is set to be closed next month for further assessment ahead of a full refurbishment, the Department of Infrastructure has said.

Port St Mary High Street will be closed to through traffic and parking will be suspended from 1 until 12 December for excavation works.

The work is ahead of the restoration scheme to tackle the poor state of the road, planned for early 2026.

In a letter to residents, the department said a series of trenches would be excavated to assess the ground conditions and subsurface infrastructure.

The information would be "essential" before the six-month reconstruction project took place next year, the department continued.

It follows radar surveys carried out in September to map out the issues under the surface for the works, which the department previously said could cost up to £500,000.

The poor condition of the road surface had been highlighted by Michelle Haywood, prior to her appointment as Infrastructure Minister, by planting daffodils in potholes.
