Plans to build a new "village" of 1,400 homes have been submitted to North Yorkshire Council.

According to the documents from Persimmon Homes Ltd, the development, known as 'Mountby', would also include a primary school, a local centre and a village green.

The 131-hectare site is located to the east of Scarborough Business Park and south of Cayton and Eastfield.

A previous proposal was submitted to the local authority in 2019 but a design panel requested a "fundamental rethink."

Sustainable living

The current planning application has sought full consent for the first phase of the scheme, which would consist of 251 dwellings, site access and a spine road to provide parking and infrastructure.

If approved, the full development would provide a mix of one- to four-bedroom properties, ranging from flats to detached dwellings.

The proposals include a playground, recreational areas and space for community activities. It would “promote a sustainable way of living”.

The new streets would be designed to favour walking and cycling over "private vehicles".

The scheme is under consideration by North Yorkshire Council planners.
