A teenager has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a pedestrian was hit by a car in Barnsley.

The 17-year-old was driving an Audi A3 when it was in collision with the 40-year-old man as he crossed Harborough Hill Road at about 19:41 BST on Friday.

South Yorkshire Police said the teenager initially fled the scene but was later arrested.

The force said they believed the blue Audi had been "hidden somewhere" and were continuing searches to find it.

Police said the pedestrian died at the scene and that his family were being supported by specialist officers.

A spokesperson said: "We are asking anyone who sees a blue Audi A3 with damage consistent to being involved in a collision to contact us immediately."

The force also appealed for any witnesses to the collision or anyone with relevant footage to get in touch.
