24-hour mental health text support launched

Text 'Space' to 85258 to connect with a trained mental health professional

An around-the-clock text message service offering mental health support has been launched for people living in Birmingham and Solihull.
Sending the word "space" to 85258 will connect people with a trained mental health professional, offering free and confidential support. The initiative involves Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (BSMHFT) and crisis text line SHOUT.
Chief Executive of the trust RoÃsìn Fallon-Williams said the new localised approach offered a first step for people who may not feel ready or able to talk in person or over the phone.
But from 4 August, residents can start a text conversation and receive anonymous support which does not appear on phone bills.
Ms Fallon-Williams added: "It also reflects our commitment to delivering the NHS Long Term Plan by empowering people to take control of their mental wellbeing and mental health early and reducing the risk of crisis."
Anyone experiencing anxiety, loneliness, depression, or other mental health challenges can access the helpline
Caroline Westley, director of income at Mental Health Innovations which created SHOUT, said the service would help "ease pressure" on 111 and in-person support "while ensuring no one has to face a mental health challenge alone".
