Plan for five-storey apartment block rejected

Plans to demolish a former gospel meeting hall in Sheffield and build a five-storey apartment block on the site have been rejected.
PTA Developments planned to create 53 flats on the plot off Carter Knowle Road in the south of the city.
But Sheffield City Council's planning committee turned down the scheme after officers said it failed to meet obligations to provide affordable housing.
A spokesperson for the developer said it "simply wasn't viable" for the company to make the financial contribution towards affordable homes.
Initial plans said 67 new apartments would be built on the site but the scheme was reduced in size.
The council received 42 objections to the application and a petition against the proposals was signed by 108 people, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
The planning meeting on Tuesday heard the council had expected the developer to provide one apartment under the government's First Homes discount scheme for first-time buyers.
They were also required to contribute £530,555 towards providing affordable housing elsewhere in the city.
But an agent for PTA Developments said the company could not afford to meet these obligations.
Councillors unanimously rejected the application.
