Views sought on Beautiful Jersey as island anthem

Crowds gather at Liberation Square for Liberation Day Jersey 2024. The sun is shining and there are blue skies. Hundreds of people are sat on chairs as they take part in the celebrations. Islanders and visitors are wearing hats and sunglasses. Some are holding the Jersey flag, which is white with a red cross surmounted by a yellow "Plantagenet crown".

Views are being sought on plans to adopt the song Beautiful Jersey as the island's official anthem.

The Government of Jersey said a public consultation, which launches on Monday, would open until 18 January 2025.

Ministers also asked for views on whether Liberation Day should be recognised as the island's national day, ahead of the 80th anniversary.

Deputy Carolyn Labey, Minister for International Development, said she wanted to formalise a national day and a Jersey anthem ahead of Liberation Day 2025.

'Sense of community'

Island Home by Gerard Le Feuvre was chosen as Jersey's official anthem at a special event at the Jersey Opera House in 2008.

But Ms Labey said the song Beautiful Jersey was "already viewed by many" as the island's anthem, adding it had been used at events "for some time".

"However, it has never been officially agreed as such," she said.

The island's national anthem is God Save the King.

Adopting 9 May as an official national day would not change the way Liberation Day was celebrated, Ms Labey said.

"But it will help jurisdictions around the world better understand its importance to islanders," she said.

"We hope to strengthen a sense of community and citizenship in Jersey through this consultation, while also commemorating our heritage and history."
