Costs of new library increases by more than £100k

Costs to construct a new library have increased by more than £100,000.
Essex County Council said as certain materials are no longer available, contractors were having to use more expensive alternatives to build Shenfield Library.
According to Local Democracy Reporting Service the previous 1960s brick building was demolished in the summer of 2022 and the new project was supposed to be completed this Autumn.
The council said "higher specification items" being used by contractor Essex Housing would "improve the value of the private residential units" above the new library.
Once complete, the site will be home to a larger modern library, meeting room, new public garden, and outdoor learning space. The new development will also create flexible commercial space.
The council said taking into account the various cost additions, the total net overspend came to £136,450.
An additional contingency of £30,000 has been requested should any further minor changes be required.
A temporary library service is being offered at Bishops Hill in Rayleigh Road, Hutton.
