Network Rail has announced a £1m investment to "future-proof" the rail line between Stranraer and Ayr.

The work will involve improving drainage at key sections of the track between the two stations.

Ross Moran, route director at Network Rail Scotland, said: "We're investing in essential improvements to help make the line more resilient to Scotland's challenging weather."

More than 2,000 tonnes of materials will be used to help prevent flooding and provide more reliable services for commuters.

The project will also involve a level crossing upgrade and inspections will be carried out of embankments and other structures.

The work will begin following the last train on 28 November.

Replacement buses will run between Stranraer and Ayr throughout the upgrade, with train services scheduled to resume on 8 December.

Mr Moran said: "We know this work means short term changes to journeys, and we apologise for any inconvenience it will cause."
