Bomb disposal experts were called to a village in Derbyshire after two unexploded shells were found.
Derbyshire Police said officers were called to reports of the discovery at about 09:20 BST on Thursday, in Charlesworth, near Glossop.
A cordon was put in place in Town Lane, Long Lane and Marple Road, while nearby residents were warned to stay out of their gardens as a precaution, the force added.
A police spokesperson said: "The Explosives Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit of the Army took the items away to a safe location and destroyed them."
Police added: "People living nearby may have heard a loud bang but we would like to reassure them that there is no reason to be alarmed."
A spokesperson for the British Army confirmed an EOD team was called out on Thursday.
The items were confirmed to be two 18-pounder artillery shells and were disposed of using a controlled explosion.

Grocer Kim Hartshorne said the incident - which did not result in any injuries - made for an exciting day in the village
Village grocer Kim Hartshorne said the shells were discovered in a nearby garden.
The 64-year-old said a neighbour "came into the shop and said he found two bombs" and police were called.
Bomb disposal experts were there "pretty much all day", before they "loaded up" a vehicle and made a quick "controlled exit", she added.
"It was a bit of excitement for the village," she said.
