A series of lane closures on a major route lasting until early next year are set to begin.

The closures on Ringwood Road in Poole are part of a £17.5m improvement scheme aiming to make the road safer and reduce congestion.

Beginning on Monday, the scheduled closures between the Alderney Roundabout and the Mountbatten Roundabout will run until the beginning of February.

The northbound carriageway will be closed between 22:00 BST on Monday until 06:00 the next morning.

Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council has warned motorists that a series of lane closures will follow while the road works are completed:

  • 10 September: Southbound overnight road closure; northbound single lane closure (22:00 - 06:00 BST)

  • 9 September to 30 October: Northbound single lane closure

  • 30 October to 16 January: Southbound single lane closure

  • 11 November to 16 January: Single northbound lane closures, if needed

  • 17 January 2025 to 6 February 2025: Northbound and southbound single lane closures

The authority has warned motorists to allow extra time for their journeys during affected times, with signposted diversion routes in affect.

Among the changes being made during the works are two new bus lanes, 23 side-road junction enhancements and the reconstruction of Sea View Road junction.

A new two-way cycle track and 1.1 miles (1.8km) of new pavement will also be put in place in the first phase of the scheme.

Work on the section of road is expected to last until Spring 2025.

A public drop-in event about the scheme is being held from 14:00 to 19:00 BST at The Newtown venue in Poole on 18 September.
