Rugby club chair hopes England win can spark growth

England beat Canada 33 to 13 at the Women's Rugby World Cup final

A club's head of women's rugby says she hopes England's victory in the World Cup will spark further growth in the sport.

Lindsey Garraway, chair of the women's section at Bridgnorth Rugby Club in Shropshire, said she was "absolutely buzzing" after the Red Roses beat Canada 33 to 13 on Saturday.

Their third World Cup win was in front of a record women's rugby crowd of 81,885 at Twickenham and came after losing the previous two finals to New Zealand.

Ms Garraway, who was at the final, told BBC Radio Shropshire: "It was just such an incredible and amazing experience to be a part of."

She said the atmosphere was "crazy" while England "did not let up" and continued to pile the pressure on Canada throughout the match.

"You could just tell just how badly they wanted it and how much they deserved that win," she added.

Asked what it meant for the future of women's rugby, Ms Garraway said it was great to see people who had been "absolutely hooked on the experience" during the tournament.

She added: "I just hope that materialises into the growth of women's and girls' rugby."

Among the winning Red Roses was Shrewsbury-born Lilli Ives Campion, who previously played for Telford Hornets and is now based at Loughborough Lightning.

Following England's victory, the Hornets said they were "extremely proud" of their former player and described her as an "absolute inspiration" to girls in the sport.
