Charges at some council-run car parks in an area of Surrey could increase by about 10%.

Tandridge District Council is proposing changes to its off-street parking order for the first time since 2018.

The updated prices could come into force on 3 March and would include higher parking charges to cover maintenance and improvements, and increased season ticket and contract space fees to pay for enforcement activities.

A public consultation on the planned changes closes on 31 January, after which the council will review the comments and consider amending the order.

Council leader Catherine Sayer said: "We do need to increase the car park charges, which start once the free parking period ends, to meet the increasing costs of providing car parking and enforcement."

The council-owned car parks that could be affected are in Town End in Caterham, Mill Lane in Hurst Green, Gun Pit Road in Lingfield, Ellice Road in Oxted, Woldingham Road in Woldingham, Hillside Road, Station Road, and at the recreation ground in Whyteleafe.

There are no changes proposed to the various two, three or four-hour free parking periods currently available at the sites.

The council leader said the authority was committed to keeping free parking to support local shops and businesses.

"We are one of the few councils which still provides free parking, because we know how important it is to our residents and businesses," Sayer added.
