A man trained in martial arts has been sentenced for a one-punch attack.

Kanan Scotney, 30, punched his victim in a "random attack" at a beer garden in Nottingham before walking away at about 10:30 BST on 16 August 2023.

The victim, a man who had an existing serious health condition, collapsed at the scene and suffered a bleed on the brain, police said.

On Tuesday, Scotney, of Hereford Road in Nottingham, was sentenced to 16 months in prison, suspended for two years, after previously admitting inflicting grievous bodily harm.

Nottinghamshire Police said Scotney's victim fell backwards after being punched, hitting his head on a table before hitting the floor.

Scotney had walked away from the scene, only returning to look for a bracelet he had lost during the "unprovoked and violent assault", the force added.

Det Sgt Simon Carter said: "Scotney may not have been intending to cause the injuries he did but is a powerfully-built man who is trained in martial arts.

"Just one punch can become a life-changing event for both the offender and the victim and given the latter's vulnerabilities in this case, it is fortunate he was not even more seriously hurt."
