Detectives are hunting two men after a woman was subjected to a "terrifying" sexual assault in Clydebank.

Police said two members of the public intervened when they witnessed the incident, which happened on The Crescent, Dalmuir, at about 20:20 on Saturday.

Officers said a second man stood in a car park nearby during the attack.

The suspects left in the direction of Dalmuir Train Station after they were challenged.

Both men are white, between 30 and 40, of average build and spoke with Eastern European accents.

They were wearing dark clothing and carrying rucksacks.

Police said the first man is about 5ft 7in.

The second suspect is 5ft 9in with short dark hair.

Officers have been carrying out local inquiries and checking CCTV from the area.

Det Insp Craig Bate said: "This was terrifying for the woman involved and extremely upsetting for the members of the public who came to her rescue.

"I believe there was a sexual motive to this crime and the victim is being supported by specialist officers."

He said the area, which is overlooked by flats and is just off a main road, would have been "relatively busy" at the time and urged anyone with information to get in touch, external.

Det Insp Bate added incidents like this were rare and there would be increased police patrols.
