Major A-road closed one-way for seven weeks

Four traffic cones and a big red ROAD CLOSED sign on the edge of a roundabout. There's a white sign pointing right saying Coxley, Glastonbury and Street on the A39. In the background there's a big bricked building and traffic is flowing onto the roundabout on the opposite side.

Traffic is unable to go on the A39 from Wells to Glastonbury for the next seven weeks

A major Somerset A-road has been partially closed for nearly two months for roadworks and resurfacing work.

The A39 Glastonbury Road, in Wells, is now one-way only between Jocelyn Drive and the Strawberry Way roundabout until 28 October.

Traffic leaving Wells is now being diverted via the A371 to Shepton Mallet and the A361 to Glastonbury - a 15 mile (24km) diversion.

Somerset Council said works included water, power and gas upgrades as well as resurfacing.

Lisa McKay lives nearby in Wells and said the road closure was a "big inconvenience".

She told BBC Radio Somerset: "For me to come back from Shepton Mallet today, I had to go all the way to Glastonbury.

"That would usually take me 15 minutes, it's now 45 minutes - it's a really long diversion.

"People will end up using the smaller rat-runs so traffic is going to be crazy.

"Seven weeks is a long time for a road to be closed."

Somerset Council has been approached for a further comment.
