Police are appealing for witnesses after a young child was killed after being hit by a van on a residential street.

Dorset Police said it responded to a report just before 14:00 BST on Friday of a collision on Cutlers Place in Colehill involving a Ford Transit van and a young child pedestrian.

The child was pronounced dead at the scene, and their family had been informed and were being supported by specialist officers, police said.

Road closures remain in place in the area as a detailed examination of the scene is carried out.

Insp Joe Wheable, from Dorset Police, said: "First and foremost our thoughts and hearts go out to the family and loved ones of the young child who very sadly died in this collision.

"We are continuing to carry out a detailed investigation to establish the full circumstances of what happened.

He urged witnesses of the incident to come forward, and thanked the public for their patience during road closures.
