More than 1,000 illegal fireworks are set to be destroyed, having been seized by police.

The haul was discovered in a house in Seacroft, in Leeds, after officers received reports about explosives being sold illegally in the area.

West Yorkshire Police said the fireworks were believed to be worth at least £10,000.

An investigation, led by West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, is now under way.

The discovery is the latest made by police after a tip-off from the public.

Last week, police warned explosives discovered at a house in Wakefield could have have caused a "major incident".

And earlier in October, three men were arrested after thousands were found in a garage in Bradford.

Insp Alastair Nicholls from the Leeds East Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “We know the illegal sale and potential anti social use of fireworks is a real concern for residents and want to thank all those who contact us with information.

“There is a reason such items are only sold by legal retailers with safeguards on who can purchase them and when, and we will act on any report of them being sold illegally."
