A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life, police have said.

Devon and Cornwall Police said officers were called to assist the fire service at a building on Greenbank Road, Plymouth, at about 17:30 BST on 14 June.

Three people were still inside the property when crews arrived and they had to be rescued by firefighters, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue service said.

Police said a 30-year-old man from Plymouth was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and was later released on bail until September.

"Following initial enquiries, the cause of the fire is believed to be suspicious," police added.

A fire service statement said four fire engines were initially dispatched with the number being increased to six after reports of a "possible explosion".

The statement added that none of the occupants of the property needed any medical treatment.
