Homes planned for controversial abattoir site

The abattoir on Ansley Lane previously operated as a butcher's shop

A planning application has been submitted for seven new homes on the site of a controversial abattoir.
Bosses at T&S Abattoir on Ansley Lane in Arley, Warwickshire, said in March they had taken steps "to ensure that there can be no breaches of animal welfare on our site" after covert footage showed treatment of sheep described as "shocking and disturbing".
In April it had its licence revoked, and in June a retrospective application to expand the site was refused.
The latest plans seek permission to demolish current buildings and replace them with six houses, a bungalow and a new entrance to the 1,488 sq m (16,016 sq ft) site.
The proposals also include parking space for 14 cars.
Warwickshire Police raised no objection to the plans, saying "the change has to be seen as an enhancement and improvement of the area".
Arley Parish Council said it was pleased at the principle of Glenside being used for housing, but objected to the plans due to fears of overdevelopment.
The parish council described the proposed scheme as "an eyesore that dominates all of the existing buildings," adding: "Because of the height of the three storey houses, will radically change the amount of sunlight they get in the course of a day."
Earlier this year, a request for permission for changes that had already been made to existing buildings on the site was refused by North Warwickshire Borough Council.
The planning committee raised concerns over road safety as well as noise and odours.
