About 50 homes have been flooded after a water pipe burst in Basingstoke.

Residents in Trinidad Close alerted authorities that water was in their homes at about 05:20 GMT, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said.

Properties in Malta Close, Falkland Road and Carpenters Down have also been affected, while others have been left with no water or low water pressure, but repairs have begun.

Firefighters left at about 08:30, and Basingstoke and Deane Council opened Popley Fields Community Centre in Popley Way for those impacted.

South East Water's distribution manager Gavin Jobling apologised for the issues.

"We're working with affected homeowners to ensure their properties are made safe and any damage is repaired," he said.

"We are sorry to customers who have experienced no water or low pressure due to the burst and we're working hard to move water around our network to try and restore supplies to as many customers as we can.

"We will work to complete the repairs as quickly as possible and apologise to everyone affected by this."

VIVID Homes' Beth Holmyard said some of its customers have been affected and will move into temporary accommodation.
