A tutoring programme for GCSE pupils in Bradford is being extended into science subjects following success in helping students with English and maths.

Run by the University of Bradford, tutors will deliver sessions in pupils' schools for one hour a week over a 15-week period.

Run in conjunction with the Tutor Trust, the tutors will be a mixture of trained academics, undergraduate and PhD students.

The university said results from 2022/23 showed average GCSE grades "generally increased" among those pupils who had attended tutorials.

The university said the programme began in December 2020, concentrating on boosting maths as a "fast response" to the Covid pandemic and to "try and counter attainment gaps".

Due to the successful results seen, the programme was then expanded to include English tutoring.

For the 2024/25 academic year, it will include a new science programme which will cover chemistry, biology and physics, the university said.

Sharon Sadler, The Tutor Trust Strategic Partnership Manager for West Yorkshire, said: “We hope that, in working together, we can support even more young people on their educational journey.

“Our science tutoring will run alongside the maths and English tutoring already successfully provided by the University of Bradford, reinforcing support in core subjects and improving outcomes.”
