A second Tesco superstore is set to open in the Isle of Man’s capital as part of the firm’s takeover of a local supermarket chain.

The supermarket at Little Switzerland, just off Victoria Road in Douglas, is the second store to be rebranded after the firm’s buyout the of Shoprite's nine stores.

Last month saw the opening of the first express shop in Castletown.

The Tesco brand first arrived on the island in 2000 with the opening of its other superstore, on Lake Road in the capital.

The latest store includes a Changing Place toilet specifically designed for disabled users, which is only the second of its kind on the island, and a coffee shop.

Store director Andy Sanderson said: “Opening our first superstore on the island for 25 years is really exciting.

“We’re really looking forward to serving the local community and we hope facilities such as The Coffee Shop and the Changing Places toilet will be well received locally.”

To mark the opening, the firm has donated £1,000 to the charity Wish Upon a Dream, which works to grant the wishes of terminally ill children.
