Huge sugar beet crop found dumped on road

The unexpected load was discovered by the side of Old Norwich Road, Ipswich, on Tuesday morning

A "large amount" of sugar beet has been found dumped on a road beside a town bus route.

The vast quantity of the crop was discovered on Old Norwich Road in Ipswich.

Suffolk County Council said its waste team had been informed along with Ipswich Borough Council.

A spokesman added: "We don’t know why it’s there, or who put it there."

According to British Sugar, the plant, which is grown commercially to be made into refined sugar, is generally worth about £40 a tonne.

Old Norwich Road is a dedicated bus route, and the council said the dumped sugar beet was blocking the cycleway lane.

"We are aware of the large amount of sugar beet that has been fly-tipped along Old Norwich Road," Suffolk County Council said on X.

"We hope the owner will collect and remove it as soon as possible."

The road is for single file traffic, not for the storage of sugar beet
