Arrests as woman and girl injured and man stabbed

A man has been stabbed and a woman and girl left with serious injuries in an incident on Monday morning.

Emergency services were called shortly after 08:00 BST to reports that a man had been stabbed in Whernside, in Carlisle.

When officers arrived at the scene they also found a woman in her 50s and a girl with serious injuries. All three are being treated in hospital.

Cumbria Police said a man and a woman had been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

The woman and the girl were taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle where their condition is described as stable.

The man, in his 50s, was taken to Cumberland Infirmary with a stab wound.

Police said both the 55-year-old man and the 53-year-old woman who had been arrested had been injured.

The Great North Air Ambulance Service said its critical care team was sent after it "received reports of an assault".

North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) said it was called to the address in Carlisle at 08:08 BST.

Three ambulances and a helicopter were deployed to the scene, NWAS added.
